Xativa

In Valencia region there is a small city called Xativa. It has a long history an already in Roman litteratur it is mentioned. For example Ovid and Catullus mention it’s existence. City has a railway-station and journey from Valencia takes about 30 minutes. DSC02163

Just beside city in very high hill position is located a castle that keeps city’s tourist flow constant. When one look’s from city border upwards the hills the castle on top of the hill seem to be too far away.
DSC02144

After climbing some 30 minutes one get’s up near the gate. This castle has more than 1000 years origin.
DSC02188

Gate and walls around have been modernized so castle looks very pretty.
DSC02193

Inside one finds a nice looking gardens and some houses and offices inside inner yard.
DSC02207

In inner yard one can decide to go either east or west. On west side is the actual bigger old castle and east smaller castle part.
DSC02214

I decide to go west. High stairs will take me there and to see the old castle and it’s living quarters. And higher and higher the path leads.
DSC02258

It is said that actually Roderic Borgia was born in castle – the same who later became well known as pope Alexander VI.
tykuddkuyttyk

The first buildings have some old living quarters. Maybe Borgia himself sat here as a young man. Many remember him from movies and tv-series. I have seen at least three different versions.
DSC02219

On my way to the top I visit also a small scale museum.
DSC02215

A model of an older period of the castle in museum.
bbbbbbbbbbbbbb

The way of life in older times … a bird, several pot with different foodstuff near fireplace. All that is needed…
DSC02235

Shield, spear and mail-chain jacket. Maybe from times of reconquista.
DSC02243

A muslim sword found here. As Valencia and many others regions also Xativa were ones parts of Al-Andalusia. Also this castke and city below was held by muslims for hundred years. with heavy work city was finally conquered by christian kings.
DSC02245
Scenery’s from one of the upper patios towards east.
DSC02270

Higher and higher takes stairs when one goes to west. Whole castle is like a saddle – low in middle and high on the ends.
DSC02265

Opposite the old castle rises the newer and smaller castle.
DSC02268

More and more stairs when I walk to the west – to the old housing quarters.
DSC02276

Closer look towards east – the new castle – by zooming the view closer. Nice !
DSC02309

Here one can also see how far down below city and it’s people lie. Here in Xativa one is really top of the life.
DSC02290

Little bit higher a new level with a nice blue foundation. And a canon on right side.
DSC02279

Well! Now we are getting somewhere! Too see this I travelled from Valencia half an hour and tried to get train ticket for several hours. But scenery is perfect! How nice it would have been living here and look these views every day…
DSC02329

Now we can better se how high the hills are. Far away down below is the city and people’s houses – on both sides of hills.
DSC02326

And we continue towards west and rise higher and higher – towards old living quarters.
DSC02337

There is a nice level in upper part where one can see very typical fountain and pool. Looks like Al-Andalus time !
DSC02345

Probably once nobles have been spending time here .. walking between trees and bushes. High above ordinary citizens. They must have felt like gods…
DSC02358

Now we get to gate which leads the highest point of the castle and old living quarters.
DSC02387

This used to be chapel in ancient times. Maybe even becoming pope Borgia prayed here.
DSC02396

Straight forward lies the highest point of old castle. One there were plenty of rooms.
DSC02402

Look backwards to gate from still standing wall…
DSC02416

Here is the peak point of Xativa. Here one has excellent vies to every direction on hill castle.
DSC02441

… and flag of Valencia region is over me.
DSC02426

Here were can see the city of Xativa. Looks far away. I wonder how nobles in the castle have felt… Probably like they were gods and people down just ants…
DSC02430

A nice level on the upper inner yard. Maybe once ladies have been spending their leisure time here …playing games.
DSC02445

A very nice view from upper level. Here one can see the gate to upper level and everything downwards. It is easy to see that this castle have been very difficult to conquer.
DSC02457

The way to upper living quarters goes through several levels. I wonder how often they have taken time to visit the city .. .heavy journey.
DSC02459

Nice view towards east. Another Valencian flag on eastern castle – the new castle.
DSC02480

Nice window frame. Column in middle looks again like Al-Andalus times – who knows…
DSC02492

Some sign with old style text. Can’t understand but probably something about the place.
DSC02491

Here om southern side of upper level used to be the room of guards.
DSC02493

Last looks to old living quarters…
DSC02504

It’s time to get back down again…
DSC02511

And through the gate again…
DSC02523

And down …
DSC02534

The eastern castle part waits for my visit.
DSC02548

Through the gate to newer castle.
DSC02558

And journey up can start…I have only 30 minutes left so I must hurry … road is steep and I must walk quickly towards new castle.
DSC02560

View backwards. Old castle looks laying high like clouds.
DSC02565

Now through the second gate – the actual gate to castle. This used to be the castle part of cavalrymen.
DSC02566

And higher and higher after gate.
DSC02571

A view from new castle to old castle. I am standing now on middle part of castle. Majestic views…
DSC02574

There are many openings towards city and road to castle. It has been easy to prevent enemy getting forward to castle.
DSC02573

Here the views on both sides are extraordinary great. Here one can feel to be over ordinary citizens.
DSC02582

The city of Xativa lies down and castle is watching over it – like in Granada.
DSC02586

Here we can see the line of walls and towers which were once part of castle. They made the castle very difficult to conquer.
DSC02592

Of course soldiers needed toilet. Here one – still in tact…
DSC02601

The look of inner part of castle. Here probably once were quarters of soldiers.
DSC02600

View from wall top towards castle yard.
DSC02608

Not much left from structures insides but Valencian flag is still vawering on the top.
DSC02620

Here used to be the watchtowers of castle.
DSC02636

Also flag is located on highest top of new castle.
DSC02642

View to east. We see that this ridge continues rather narrow forward. Castle is build on this kind of rock.
DSC02638

Again view backwards towards old castle. Also other tourist have already found the castle and are walking towards top of the old castle.
DSC02667

View to southern side of hill on little lower level with zoom closer. It is still rather steep ridge. Difficult for army to attack…
DSC02683

It is time to get bus. My train leaves after 30 minutes and there is still long trip through steep ridge to town.
DSC02690

Some escutcheons on walls in the castle yard. Probably owners – land lords – of this castle…
DSC02702

Info board of the castle but my spanish is not too good.
DSC02703

Time to leave – solong Xativa.
