Just some 25 minutes journey from center of Gijon there is a very nice museum called “Villa Romana de Varenes”. It is located on high hill slope with a very nice view into valley before.
general view of villa and the valley in front of.
Some nice mosaic patters inside.
As one can see main building is done with big money and is very nice looking. Probably museum is built by EU-money, because it is really excellent. Anyway one can recommend visiting this museum even though one must take taxi to get there.
Illustration how villa and its buildings have once been when Roman lord lived there.
But years went by and this is what was left for modern times.
Excavation area is rich of artifacts – here many different kind of tools from Roman times.
And some pottery used for cooking and dinners.
Fragments of pottery used once in Roman kitchen.
Now it is time for outside tour. We walk towards main house of ancient villa from actual museum.
View over valley from path to villa is very nice indeed.
Inside main building one can find very nice mosaic works.
